Durham Closes City Hall Plaza to Improve Accessibility to City Hall

Durham, N.C. – Beginning Monday, March 14, 2011, City Hall Plaza, which provides access to City Hall, will be closed to vehicular traffic until July 2011.

Throughout the project, pedestrians will have access to all public entrances of City Hall as well as a designated drop-off for residents with disabilities, which will be the semi-circle next to City Hall (night deposit drop-off location) located on Mangum Street. A wheelchair lift is accessible from the Mangum Street drop-off for residents who wish to enter City Hall from the Annex level.

Reminiscent of the Downtown Revitalization Project, the City Hall Plaza Improvement Project includes resurfacing, curb and gutter, sidewalks with brick pavers, streetlights, storm drainage, water lines, and landscaping. It also includes a new drop-off area for residents with disabilities, which will be separated from vehicular traffic on City Hall Plaza to provide a safer area to enter City Hall.

The City of Durham’s Public Works Department is also installing seven Filterra Bioretention Sys-tems, which will capture stormwa¬ter pollutants to treat urban runoff. The combi¬nation of landscape vegetation and a specially designed filter allows bacteria, metals, nutrients, and suspended solids to be removed from stormwater pollutants naturally.
